New Publication: Art and Design Aiding Children Living With Autism in Nairobi

Abstract

Background: The number of children affected by autism has risen, with 1 in every 59 children being diagnosed within the spectrum (WHO, 2022). In Kenya, the disorder affects approximately four per cent of the population according to a 2007 Autism Society of Kenya estimation. Such children face certain day to day challenges with the main ones falling under communication, social interaction, sensory sensitivities and behavioural issues.

Wednesday Architectural Talk/Seminar - Mutua Matheka

The department today 3.05.2023 afternoon hosted Mutua Matheka, who had been invited to mentor and inspire students.

Matheka is a travel & architectural photographer and a Ford Foundation fellow based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Present during the presentation where staff and students from the Faculty of the built environment who were inspired by his story and journey.

Presentation by Mtamu Kililo

The department on 19th April 2023, hosted Mtamu Kililo who made a presentation to the students.

The Architectural talk was held at the 4th year Architecture Studios from 2.00PM - 4.00PM.

Kililo is a Co-Founder and CEO of MycoTile that offers advanced building materials; locally manufactured using readily available agricultural waste and rapidly growing mushroom mycelium as bonding agent.

3RD YEAR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FIELD TRIP TO VOI, TAITA TAVETA COUNTY

During the one week Studio in Voi, the students undertook; a familiarization tour of the town and surrounding villages, formed work groups, identified and demarcated extent of the study area, documented the house forms and human settlements in the study areas, carried out site analysis and collected data on case studies related to the Project Design Brief. They undertook interviews in respective study areas, made free-hand sketches, using tape measures and took photographs.
