The project was established in 1967 as a project unit within the Department of Architecture in the faculty of Architecture, Design and Development.

The programme of activities was to conduct research with a multidisciplinary team with the aim of improving housing conditions and community services in rural and urban areas.

The unit was further expanded to accomodate the expanded status and functions of the 'seventies' and renamed housing and Building Research Institute (HABRI)
