Abstract

This thesis would have remained a dream had it not been for Arch. Erastus Abonyo whose contribution and constructive criticism has pushed me to expend the kind of efforts I have exerted to make this work as original as it can be. Thanks to him I have experienced true research and my knowledge on the subject matter has been broadened. I will never forget you sir. Many thanks to the faculty and staff at the Department of Architecture who offered much needed help in one way or the other.

I appreciate Dr Romi Grammaticas and the KSC family for their contribution to my education, Triad architects whose mentorship program has cultivated in me a desire for excellence in the beloved profession of architecture. Many thanks to Mr Mungai a great family friend for his insights and tremendous support.

My deepest gratitude to all in my family, my mom Lucy Kimani for her guidance and great values she has imparted on me. My cousins Monica, Maryanne and Moni who have been with me every step of the way. My friends and colleagues who have always cheered me on since the very beginning of this course. My utmost regard to my late Aunt Tabitha Nyambura and Grandfather Joseph Kimani who instilled in me great values and a burning desire for learning.

Last but not least, the people of Naivasha who made this research possible, I owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

Without your support I could never have made it!
