Visiting Students and Staff from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Fifth year Students and Staff led by Prof. John Stephen Ellis from the Department of Architecture,
Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts, USA are visiting the Department of
Architecture, University of Nairobi from Sunday, 17th September to 24th September 2023. While in
Nairobi, they are undertaking a week-long architectural study of Mathare in Nairobi as part of their
Architectural Studio together with our Fifth Year Students.

AfRES Conference: RICS Sustainability & Decarbonisation Panel Discussion

Four faculty members from the Department of Architecture took part in a lively panel discussion during the 22nd AFRES 2023 (African Real Estate Society) conference discussing the Sustainability and Decarbonisation in the built environment in Africa held at the Chandaria Hall, University Towers, Main Campus on 15th September 2023.

Courtesy visit and Guest talk: Celebrating 50 year since joining the Department

The department hosted Arch. Isaac Nyabwana, Arch. Cosmas Busima, Qs. Bramwell Kimokoti and
Prof. Stephen O. Diang’a. who visited the Department on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.


They held a talk with the  5th year Architecture students who are currently on their fourth term. The Dean, Faculty of Built Environment and Design Prof. Lilac A. Osanjo thanked them for coming back to share their experiences and encouraging the students.

New Publication: Art and Design Aiding Children Living With Autism in Nairobi

Abstract

Background: The number of children affected by autism has risen, with 1 in every 59 children being diagnosed within the spectrum (WHO, 2022). In Kenya, the disorder affects approximately four per cent of the population according to a 2007 Autism Society of Kenya estimation. Such children face certain day to day challenges with the main ones falling under communication, social interaction, sensory sensitivities and behavioural issues.

Wednesday Architectural Talk/Seminar - Mutua Matheka

The department today 3.05.2023 afternoon hosted Mutua Matheka, who had been invited to mentor and inspire students.

Matheka is a travel & architectural photographer and a Ford Foundation fellow based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Present during the presentation where staff and students from the Faculty of the built environment who were inspired by his story and journey.

Presentation by Mtamu Kililo

The department on 19th April 2023, hosted Mtamu Kililo who made a presentation to the students.

The Architectural talk was held at the 4th year Architecture Studios from 2.00PM - 4.00PM.

Kililo is a Co-Founder and CEO of MycoTile that offers advanced building materials; locally manufactured using readily available agricultural waste and rapidly growing mushroom mycelium as bonding agent.
