Abstract

Humanpopulationincitiesallovertheworldhasdramaticallyincreasedcausingfragmentationoftheurbanfabric(UNHSP–UN-HABITAT),2013,)Theincreasingurbanpopulationleadstochangesinthephysicalformofcitiescausedbythedemandofspacesandservices.
TheUnitedNationsreportonthestateofworldpopulationindicatethatby2030,theurbanpopulationsinAfricaandAsiawilldouble(HABITAT2012).
Ascitiesgrowanddevelop,considerablestrainisplacedoncityfragments,andtheyhavetoconstantlytransformandgrowtoaccommodatetheballooningpopulation.Thisgrowthcontributestoincreaseincommercialactivitiesaswellasincreasestheneedforhousing.Thecitythusexpands,takesovertheneighbouringlowdensityresidentialareas.
Areasinitiallydesignedtohandlelow-densityurbandevelopmentshavetocontendwithneedsofincreasedcommercialandresidentialactivity.
Africancitieshavetransformedconsiderablyinthepost-independenceperiod,includingeconomicbase,formsofownership,architecturalview,landstructure,methodsofplanningandgovernance.However,thepatternsofsuchtransformationaresignificantlyvaryingfordifferenttypesofcities.Inthisthesisthearchitecturaltransformationprocessesandthefactorsthatdriveurbantransformationsarediscussed.TheauthorfocusesonthebuiltformtransformationinNairobiandspecificallytheHistoricalstreetofRiverRoad.Theauthorconcentrateshiseffortonanalysingthemodesofbuiltformtransformation.Considerableattentionispaidtoidentifyingthereasonsofurbantransformation,andthetransformingelementsinthesebuiltforms.Thetransformationalpatternisanalysedinthecontextofolderdevelopmentjuxtaposedtothenewtransformedbuiltforms
