SIXTH YEAR
FIRST SEMESTER
Course Code: BAR 613
Course Title: RESEARCH PROJECT 180Hrs
Objective of the Course: To guide the candidates to come up with a self-initiated final degree architectural research project. This should have a sufficient complexity and scale as approved by the department.
Course Outline: The course is a self-initiated final degree architectural investigation report. It will be based on the student’s elective stream and should emphasize the student’s strengths and interests under the guidance of tutors. It is aimed to demonstrate the student’s all-round architectural research ability from the critical position of the problem, development of research tools and methods, ways of presentation of findings and to recommendations / conclusions
Learning Methods: A candidate will identify a research topic of sufficient complexity and depth dealing with a wide range of issues. Candidates will present their thoughts to a panel of lecturers for direction.
Evaluation Method: The students are expected to make presentations of areas of research, field work and case studies. There will be continuous assessment of performance
Final Examination: At the end of the semester the students are to submit a thesis
Learning Resources: Students are expected to refer to Doing your research project by Bell, Judith, Final report by Buckle, D.G.R., Handbook of evaluation research by Struening, Elmer L.,
An introduction to the research project by Hilbert Schenck, Jr, Project evaluation methodologies and techniques by Soumelis, Constantin G.
SECOND SEMESTER
Course Code: BAR 614
Course Title: DESIGN PROJECT 360Hrs
Objective of the Course: To guide the candidates to come up with a self-initiated final degree architectural studio project. This should have a sufficient complexity and scale as approved by the department. It should also be based on the student’s elective stream emphasise the student’s strengths and interest under the guidance of tutors, and is aimed to demonstrate the student’s all-round architectural ability from the critical position of the problem under investigation, development of a program to conceptual design, to developed detail design including a technological solution and possible implementation strategy.
Course Outline: A candidate develops a design project brief and further into a design. It will be of appropriate complexity to test advanced integration of social-cultural, pragmatic, technological, urban and environmental aspects.
Learning Methods: Lectures leading to Research and brief formulation in a design project with the aid of Fieldwork and case studies
Evaluation Method: The students are expected to make presentations of field work and case studies. There will be continuous assessment of performance
Final Examination: At the end of semester students are to present/pin-up their portfolio works
Learning Resources: Students are expected to refer to The design process : case studies in project development
