Overview
Bachelor of Architectural Studies/Bachelor of Architecture
Introduction
This is a Two Tier Degree Programme. The Bachelor of Architectural Studies takes 4 Years and with an additional 2 Years making a total of 6 years, one graduates with the Professional degree in Architecture known as Bachelor of Architecture.
The six-year Bachelor of Architecture Course leading to the degree of B.Arch. as offered by the Department of Architecture is project based with ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN as the central discipline.
To this end, the Programme Structure is pivoted around the DESIGN STUDIO, with lecture inputs in related and supporting subjects aided by Tutorials, Seminars, Laboratory and Workshop instructions as well as Field Exercises.
The first five years of the programme tackle design issues of increasing scale and complexity at individual, group and community levels, in the context of urban and rural human settlements.
The sixth and final year of the programme requires each student to prepare and submit a Written thesis and a Design project in an area of choice, as approved by the Department.
The philosophy of this programme is to search for authentic Architecture through the promotion of a sustainable environment; with the pursuit of excellence in meeting the needs of the built environment at the community, national and global levels.
Guided by market surveys, needs and stakeholders’ assessments, this programme is tailored to nurture and inspire graduates to meet the needs of the Kenyan, East African region as well as the global built environment.
The Department has proposed to the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) a recognition structure that would accommodate the new B.A.S. degree qualification within the professional structures in Kenya. BORAQS has accepted this proposal in principle and given the Department a written undertaking that they will work out details on the level of recognition of the two cadres of graduates.
The programme aims to develop in each student the ability to sensitise problems, evaluate and synthesise the student’s understanding into design solutions appropriate to their context and thus produce quality graduates in the built environment.
This is done through face-to-face teaching as well as through open, distance and electronic learning (ODeL) mode of study (ICT based delivery), practical exposure/industrial attachment, mentoring and extra-curricula activities conducted in a healthy, secure and safe environment.
Objectives
At the end of this programme, the learner should be able to:
1. Produce creative and innovative solutions that promote sustainable development goals in the construction industry.
2.Generate quality consultancy in the field of Architecture.
3.Create relevant, dynamic, market-driven academic research projects.
4.Participate in extension and community services as well as promote the profession of Architecture at local, regional and global levels.
Schedule of Intakes
The Department admits new students at the beginning of every academic calendar year (which is usually September)
