Wednesday Afternoon Talk, Arch. Philip Kungu

The Department of Architecture at the University of Nairobi hosted Architect Philip Kungu on Wednesday 27th March 2024, from 2pm - 4pm.

The afternoon talk centred on the topic “ The Uncharted Path”, gave insight into his life as a career Architect.

 

Architect Kungu peeled back the curtain on his life’s journey so far, and shared the wisdom he has acquired over the years, having engaged in academia, architectural practice and public service for well over 30 years.

 

A prolific figure in the Architectural space, Architect Kungu has worked and served in various fields.

Early in his career, he worked with several Architectural practices and the Architectural Department of the Ministry of Public Works. He then joined the Department of Architecture, University of Nairobi where he lectured over the next 10 years. Afterwards, he founded his own practice, Otieno & Kungu Associates, alongside Architect Nelson Otieno in the year 1990. 

 

In addition, he has served in various capacities over the years.

Locally, he has been active in the Architectural Association of Kenya, where Arch. Kungu has served in many task-forces, committees and boards of the Association. In the year 2000, AAK bestowed the honour of Fellow of the Architectural Association of Kenya (FAAK), in recognition of his outstanding service and contribution to the Architectural Profession in Kenya. 

Additionally, Arch. Kungu served as the 13th President of the CommonWealth Association of Architects (CAA) between 2000 – 2003, as well as the AAK representative council member to the International Union of Architects. He has also served as the Nairobi City County Public Service Board Chairperson.

Presently, he serves on the board of trustees for the East Africa Institute of Architects as well as the CAA panel of experts conducting validation Visits to Schools of Architecture in Africa.       

Architect Kungu stands out in all aspects, and continues to be active in leadership, service, mentorship, and philanthropy.
