This week, the Department of Architecture at the University of Nairobi officially opened the
11th edition of the long-awaited East Africa Architecture Workshop and Exhibition.

The theme for this year’s event was “Climate Responsive Architecture and Urbanism:
Harnessing Design Solutions for Climate Change Mitigation”
Sub-themes included:
i. Passive design Strategies
ii. Green Building Materials
iii. Renewable Energy Technologies
iv. Affordable Housing, Sustainable Cities and Communities
v. Architecture for Extreme Environments: Floods, Landslides, Earthquakes, Cyclones

The Housing Secretary, State Department for Housing and Urban Development; Q.S. Said
Athman graced the event, and delivered the Keynote address. Additionally, The University
leadership was actively present with the VC, represented by Prof. Justus Munyoki.

The Chairman Department of Architecture, took to the stage to introduce the theme, thus
setting the pace for the presentations to come. The papers presented covered various areas
including; SDG’s in Rwanda’s housing, Urban waterfront design, Pedagogical approaches to
climate-responsive architecture, Densification and conservation of Jericho Lumumba Estate,
Atria for daylighting in deep plan buildings, Sustainable shelters for street children, Building
from plastic waste in Kenya, and Internal heat gain control in metal fabrication workshops.
The day concluded with a plenary discussion on the day’s papers and the areas of interest that
arose.
