RegIONal RespONse Of bUIlT fORms; a Case Of IsIOlO TOwN aND ITs eNvIRONs

Isiolo town , popularly known as “the land on the plateau”, is situated in the upper eastern region
of Kenya (fig. 1.1). The town is currently the headquarters of Isiolo county which is bordered by
Wajir, Garissa and Mandera counties to the East , Tana River, Laikipia and Meru to the South,
Marsabit to the North and Samburu county to the west. It’s also within close proximity to major
tourist attraction sites such as Shaba game reserve, Meru national park, Samburu game reserve
and Lewa wildlife conservancy. Isiolo town is located within the arid and semi-arid lands which is
the driest and hottest region in the country.
Although Isiolo is currently a cosmopolitan town, the indigenous tribes are the Borana, Samburu,
Turkana and Gabra people. Other communities within the town include the Meru, Rendille,
Garre, Kikuyu and Somali people. The major religions practiced within the town are Islam and
Christianity.
