LANDSCAPING ELEMENTS

  1. FOUNTAIN

THE INSTITUTION HAS A FOUNTAIN BY THE

  1.

THE FOUNTAIN CREATES SOUND AND MOVEMENT.

   1) SOUNDS

A NICE AMBIENCE IS CREATED BY THE SOUND OF FALLING WATER EMANATING FROM THE FOUNTAINS.PEOPLE IN THE RESTAURANTS AND ALSO IN THE LAWNS ARE ABLE TO HEAR THE SOUND

 2)  MOVEMENT

DEVOID OF THE FOUNTAINS, THE ENTRACE WOULD BE RATHER STATIC. THE MOVEMENT OF WATER BREAKS THE MONOTONY OF STILLNESS BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE PARKED CARS AND TREES

TO AVOID EXCAVATING AROUND THE FOUNTAIN TO CREATE A POOL, BLUE COLOURED STONE HAS BEEN USED TO CREATE THE IMPRESSION OF DEPTH.

B) USE OF ROCKS

  1. ROCKS OF VARYING SHAPES AND SIZES HAVE BEEN USED, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE FOUNTAINS.

ROCKS CREATE THE IMPRESSION OF ISLANDS IN THE POOL, WHICH IS ACTUALLY VERY SHALLOW BUT COLOURED BLUE TO CREATE THE ILLUSION OF DEPTH

THE ROCKS COULD ALSO PASS FOR SEATS.

C) THE EARTH MOUND

AN IMPOSING EARTH MOUND COVERED BY WELL MAINTAINED GRASS HAS BEEN DONE.

THE SLOPE OF THE MOUND SERVES BOTH AS AN AMPHITHEATRE AND AS AN OPEN SPACE. ONLY FEW TREES ARE PLANTED ON IT, LEAVING ITS GRANDEUR UNMASKED.

STORM WATER DRAINAGE

A) STORM WATER FROM THE WALK-WAYS

A SHALLOW CHANNEL RUNS ALONG THE FOOTPATHS WITH A STEEL- GRILLE-COVERED DRAIN AT INTERVALS. THE STORM WATER FLOWS DOWN THE DRAIN INTO A SUB-TERRANIAL DRAINAGE SYSTEM.

  1. STORM WATER FROM THE PARKING LOT

AN UNCOVERED CHANNEL RUNS DIAGONALLY ACROSS THE PARKING LOT.EITHER SIDE OF THE PARKING LOT IS SLOPED TOWARDS THE CHANNEL, WHICH LEADS THE STORM WATER INTO THE STREET STORM WATER CHANNEL.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING AND FURNITURE

Light column bollards are used

 in the landscaped spaces to

 provide light at night

Seats are placed along the walkways as opposed to placing them inside the soft landscaped places. They are mainly utilized for short periods by different users. For long durations of rest, one has to move to the mound and sit on the grass.

dustbins along the walk way do not provide for refuse sorting. A better alternative would be to replace the current fixtures with those that allow sorting of garbage right at the collection point

Wall lights with steel mounting

plates are used to light the retaining walls

RETAINING WALLS, RAMPS AND STEPS

Retaining walls are clad in stacked stone which doesn’t         contrast much with the paving stones

used for the walkways

The terraced portion has ramps whose

 surface is of the same

paving stones as the walkways

BACK UP POWER GENERATION

the

Diesel generators are

 located on the rooftop parking.

They provide power in case grid

electricity fails

SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

SOLAR ENERGY

Garden City wanted a solar solution that could produce clean power for the Mall, as a sustainable alternative to grid energy and pay for itself through the energy it produced.

Garden City’s clean energy generation system makes use of otherwise unused space on the rooftop car park, to form

Africa’s largest solar carport system. So in addition to shading vehicles, the carport also generates solar electricity for use by the Garden City’s retail tenants to power things like the lights and escalators in the Mall.

At 858kWp it’s the LARGEST SOLAR CARPORT installed in Africa. It’s also the largest solar system in Nairobi.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING AND UTILIZATION

The water for irrigation is sourced entirely from rain. A 390 m2 buried tank stores the rainwater collected from the building roof. “It’s then pumped to a series of points for manual watering. The amount collected is finite and so a watering regime will be in place to water those areas that matter the most.

LESSONS DRAWN

STORM WATER DRAINAGE

-USE OF A SHALLOW DRAIN ON THE SURFACE WITH GRILLE-COVERED OPENINGS LEADING TO THE DEEPER SUB-TERRANIAL DRAIN.

SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

-GENERATION OF CLEAN ENERGY BY USE OF PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS

-EFFECTIVE HARVESTING AND UTILIZATION OF AS MUCH RAIN WATER AS POSSIBLE

-USE OF INDIGENOUS PLANTS.THESE REQUIRE LESS MAINTENANCE EFFORTS AND HELP TO MAKE THE SITE MORE ORGANIC.

OUTDOOR BENCHES

-BENCHES ARE BEST PLACED NEAR THE PATHS FOR SHORT DURATIONS OF USE.

-PEOPLE INTENDING TO STAY LONGER ARE LED TO THE GRASS COVERED AREAS TO LAY THERE. PEOPLE PREFER TO LAY DOWN ON THE GRASS IF THE DURATION OF THEIR STAY IS LONG.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

-USE OF LIGHT COLUMNS: LIGHT COLUMNS DOUBLE FUNCTIONALITY.THEY DIRECT MOVEMENT LIKE BOLLARDS AND ALSO ILLUMINATE THEIR SORROUNDINGS

-RETAINING WALLS NEED TO BE LIT TOO: WALL MOUNTED LIGHTS WITH STEEL MOUNTING PLATES ARE FIXED ON THE FACE OF THE RETAINING WALLS TO WASH THE WALLS WITH AMBIENT LIGHT AT NIGHT.

PLANTING SCALE

-GROUND COVERS ARE NEXT TO THE PATHWAYS.THESE IS FOLLOWED BY SHRUBBERRY AND LASTLY THE TREES ARE FURTHEST FROM THE PATH.

LANDSCAPING ELEMENTS

-POOL/FOUNTAIN ---TO ANIMATE A RATHER STATIC SPACE, THE SOUND AND SIGHT OF MOVING WATER COMES IN HANDY.

-ROCKS: ROCKS OF VARYING SIZES ARE STREWN AROUND THE WATER FEATURE. APART FROM AESTHETIC APPEAL, THE ROCKS ALSO SERVE AS SEATING SURFACES.
