KIRINYAGA BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

Africa economy hopes to be growing at a rate of 7% per annum but the current growing rate is between 4.5%
-5%. The continent has the growth in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and development. Despite the
growth, the continent experience difficulties in field such as Healthcare, Education, Nutrition and Environment
Sustainability. These field are essential in transforming the economy and significantly resulting to a
higher growth rate.
Amongst field, Healthcare is the most challenging. It’s mostly involve importation of
healthcare from the developed nation resulting to a significantly large sum of money been spent
from the budget to sustain it, so as to have a working nation. Most of these resources goes in purchasing
drugs, that are essential in the daily operation of Health facilities.
In
order to address and solve the challenges in healthcare, African nations need to invest in biomedical
research the continent come up with effective and efficient solution on matters of
health that affect it and produce drugs and vaccines retaining the resource in Africa and resulting to significant
steady growth rate.
Investment Biomedical research and biotechnology, does not only benefit the field of healthcare but also
significantly benefits the field of education, nutrition and environmental sustainability especially when the
five categories of biotechnology namely: Green biotechnology - focuses on agriculture and process involving
growing plants for food and other use; Red biotechnology - involve the application of biotechnology to produce
Blue Biotechnology - focuses on marine and fresh water organism; Grey biotechnology
focuses on the environmental area, including biodiversity and bioremediation; White biotechnology
focuses on chemical, material and energy, are involved.
Therefore, the design project aims taking up the challenge, by development of biomedical research and biotechnology
supported by my thesis research that was based on spatial
requirement biocontainment facility.

The will be located in East Africa, Kenya, Kirinyaga County between latitudes 0°1’ and 0° 40’ South
and Nyeri County to the North West, Murang’a County to
the
and Embu County to the East and South. It covers an area of 1,478.1 square kilometres. The
county four constituencies namely Mwea, Ndia, Kirinyaga Central and Gichugu. Mwea Constituency
comprises of two districts namely Mwea East and Mwea West Districts, while the other constituencies form
Kirinyaga Kirinyaga Central and Kirinyaga East districts respectively. According to the Kenya Population
and Housing Census 2009 report, the population of the county stood at 528,054 persons with an annual growth of 1.5 percent. The main economic activity is agriculture due to the climate of the place and due to Mount There health facilities in the county with a total bed capacity of 764 comprising of 109 public health
institutions, 39 mission/NGO institutions the largest one being Mwea Mission hospital and 54 private clinics.
There are 3 level four facilities located in Kirinyaga Central, Gichugu and Mwea Constituencies in addition
there is one private hospital namely Mt. Kenya hospital located in kerugoya town. In addition to these, there level three facilities, 45 level two facilities and 51 level one facilities which are spread all over the and the average distance to the nearest health facility is

Malaria is however on an upward trend mostly due to stagnant water in the rice fields at Mwea irrigation
scheme. the same time bilharzia is also growing due to the stagnant water in the rice fields. Lack of proper putting the county at risk from an attack from diseases like cholera.
The facilities need to be modernised with proper diagnostic facility and equipment. It also need a referral level 5 hospital with Capacity and ability to treat and diagnostic complicated illness. In addition, the
county research centre that will facilitate various medical research that affect the county
as well as the whole nation. It also needs a biotechnology facility that will enable production of drugs and
vaccines saving the county the nation large capital that would otherwise be used to import these commodities.
Kirinyaga offers an ideal environment for research for both biomedical and biotechnology purpose as it holds the water catchment area of the country and with poor sanitation due to lack of proper drainage
result to the breeding of disease causing micro-organism that spreads to the whole nation through the rivers. The Presence of Mount Kenya and its vegetation, gives a wide range of plant species that can be used
for medicinal research.
