RENDILLE ARCHITECTURE

The Rendille traditions are dying fast due to various cultural and economic changes. The modern Rendille architecture does not by itself capture the Rendille identity. New ideas and technologies have influenced the way upcoming buildings in Rendilleland should be built. Arising from this, the author pursued to study the Rendille material culture in light of prevailing contemporary situation. This was in order to derive the architectural constants and environmental design strategies which would help in creation of regional buildings that people would relate to.
This research concentrated on the Rendille living in Laisamis region within Marsabit County in Kenya. The target population of study comprised of12 Settlements each with 50-60 households of the Ntiliya village near Laisamis town and 20 contemporary buildings in Laisamis town. The sampling unit was the individual house.
The study was done through purposive sampling. Further information was collected through structured
questionnaires. The data obtained was then compared and analyzed to find patterns that revealed the architectural constants. Through this it was noted that the materials, building technology and spatial organization had transformed in time from traditional builtforms to contemporary ones. This was due to change in Rendille values in a modern setting .It has left most of them in a dillemma on how to express themselves architecturally; material culture, symbolism and spatial organization. The study recommends the
use of design parameters used in Rendille traditional architecture to inform their regional architecture. They include: centrality, dualism, hierarchy, axis, symmetry and minimalism. It further recommends use of locally
available materials with the right construction technology to bring out the Rendille identity in a modern setting. It recommends the environmental design strategies used in the traditional built form to be applied in the design of the upcoming buildings in the area.
