4th Year Projects 7 - Housing, by Ogot Stephanie

The East African Coast region presents a challenge to most designers whenever called upon to
design for its unique bioclimatic diversity. This is partly due to lack of understanding on how to
design mature buildings as the Olgyay Brothers would say, to respond to the sociological,
technological and environmental challenges in this region and thus most new developments end
up with issues related to overheating due to poor attention being given to thermal control and
provision of cooling. This has led to most buildings in the region increasingly resulting to
intensive use of air-conditioning to solve the problem of cooling, consuming large amounts of
energy in the form of electricity, and in the process causing damage to the environment. Hence
the climate of the region presents the greatest challenge to the architect not able to substitute
mechanical equipment for good design
