CONTEMPORARY WORK ENVIRONMENTS FOR ICT INNOVATION AND ENTERPRISE.

"ABSTRACT"
"There is an overwhelming consensus among researchers world over, that the work environments of today are transforming at a rapid"
"pace. The workforce of today is knowledge-based, connected through globalization and empowered by technology. The workplace environment today has to respond to all these needs as well as support the innovation activities of its users. Unfortunately, this is not the case in many modern day office environments. The physical environment of many workplaces still hold onto rigid models of 20th century office design when more flexible work environments are required to accommodate the rising mobile workforce of today. Kenya has seen the start of a number of innovation spaces such as coworking spaces and innovation hubs in the past five years, that have brought about new models of workplace design. The main aim of this thesis is therefore to study these innovation spaces in order to establish the architectural principles behind  the physical design of their workplaces. The study will thus look for the physical design characteristics of workplaces that support creativity and innovation and not ‘innovations in workplace design’."
"Selected study parameters are adapted from the work of Steelcase, a renowned United States furniture company, that has done extensive"
"research on workplace design. This information is further expounded using other authors and the published work of design companies such as Kahler Slater and Gensler. The parameters for this study are limited to: flexible space, inspiring space, collaborative space and social space. The author uses the case study method to carry out the research. Three case studies confined within the context of Nairobi are selected, namely Nairobi Garage, iHub and Nailab. Data collection methods such as observations and questionnaires are used to collect information."
"Findings from literature review are compared against data from the case studies so as to gauge the performance of the study"
"parameters. In the case of flexible space, findings point towards workplaces with a mix of fluid and fixed architectural elements such as semi-permanent walls, mobile furniture, clear circulation and way finding and spaces for both individual and group work. Inspiring space considerations are aimed at providing the use of natural lighting and views, careful use of colour and settings that are casual, informal and comfortable. Collaborative space considerations include, visual connections throughout the workspace, group areas for informal brainstorming such as lounges and access to technology and interactive displays throughout the work space. Social space considerations require, convenient access to food and beverages, comfortable lounge seating and other furniture that require mingling, casual collaboration areas near work areas and welcoming areas for guests that allow unobtrusive views to the workplace."
"Based on the research findings, the author draws recommendations that can be adopted to improve the existing workplace environments"
"that aim to support innovation and act as guidelines for future ones. Recommendations for future research are also outlined, opening"
"doors for expansion of the study subject in future research undertakings."
