WAY FINDING AND TOPOLOGY IN RETAIL MARKETS

Structuring and distinguishing the environment is a vital ability among all human beings. This is
because the need to recognize our surroundings is very crucial, as it has practical and
emotional importance on the individual. The feeling of anxiety and fear that accompanies
people when they get lost is evidence to this fact. In this context, this chapter will investigate
how human beings are able to find their way around the built environment, and how the built
environment around them supports this process. It is however concerned with the natural
wayfinding systems and will not handle in detail the use of modern systems like the Global
Positioning Systems (GPS) and digital applications like Google maps.
