ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE OF CONTEMPORARY CHURCHES IN KENYA:

In most churches spoken word and liturgical music are considered as the primary parts of worship, emphasizing the need for
good acoustic design. Good acoustics therefore have a huge role in ensuring that the primary acts of worship in churches is
achieved. Unfortunately, many churches do not understand the role of good acoustics and end up not allowing for proper
acoustic design, they invest in audio visual equipment with the assumption that they are adequate for good acoustics.
A brief introduction to acoustics gives way to the elaboration of a number of parameters that are used to identify best acoustic
performance standards in churches. These parameters are then followed through history to give an understanding of the
evolution of church acoustics. To give an in-depth understanding of the acoustic performance of the contemporary church in
Kenya, focus is laid on Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM). Three CITAM Churches, namely: CITAM Valley Road, CITAM
Karen and CITAM Woodley, are used as a representative sample of CITAM. Data is collected by through observation and
physical measurements.
The study finds out that most of the parameters identified for good acoustic design in churches are followed although with a
few faults which need to be considered in the initial stages of the church design. This emphasizes the importance of considering
acoustic design of churches right from the onset of design to avoid some of the faults experienced after construction.
