FORM, IMAGE AND CHARACTER OF AIRPORT BUILDINGS, AND THEIR TRANSFORMATION

The carried out research purpose is to be a revelation with regards to the terminal building and the lack of image, form and
character in their design. One of the major elements lacking in the airport industry is a well-understood new airport building
design language, and the research is a discourse in regards to the airport building image.
There is a gap of study in the terminal building, and the author is trying to create a new understanding of the image of the
terminal .As an intrigued reader the author, come across the iconic airport terminal architecture. The different and robust
airport designs were a major stepping-stone that motivated the author into carrying out the study. Not just interest and
curiosity the author wanted to find information and try to understand the meaning of the terminal building in terms of form
image and character.
The research objectives that the author undertook in the study made sure that a critically analyse the form, image and
character of the terminal building was done. Some of the objectives the author was hoping for see pass in the study
included, Analysing how through History the image and form of the terminal building is transforming and what is causing
some of these transformations, establish best practises in the terminal design in terms of the form, Identify variable that affect
the form image and character of airport building.
The variables gotten from the literature review is what the author took to the field and they are what helped the author in
carrying out an in depth analysis of the case studies. Local and international cases were chosen according to specific form
image and other detailed characteristics qualities according the authors research. The jomo Kenyatta international airport
in Kenya was the local case and two other international cases, which included the Barajas airport in Madrid Spain and the
Beijing international airport in china.
The new modern terminal is an iconic building with robust features, which is different from past airport terminal designs. The
only shortcoming is also its merit being that these structures are massive buildings and circulation and planning are elements
greatly affected, if the terminal building is meant to produce the best human experience.
It is in the view of the author that the understanding of the image and character of the terminal building can result in better
understanding and interpretation in their design. As a result, for the terminal building to be iconic with a good image and
character it must fulfil the variable undertaken in the study, which include; understanding passenger volumes, different
historic times, new airplane design, management of the terminal building and security in the terminal building.
