Design in hot arid imate
The first mention
of the word
'
hot desert
'
gives
an impression
of a lifeless
region
full of hardships
,
due to the harsh
climate
experienced
in these
regions
.
On the contrary
,
these
areas
also have
habitants
who
have
adopted
to the climate
since
time
in
memorial
.
The traditional
and vernacular
way
of life in these
regions
was more
sensitive
to the climate
than
in the modern
way
of life
.
These
areas
are slowly
being
filled
with developments
and the population
is in turn steadily
on the increase
.
Modern
technology
and
new
materials
,
are also fast changing
the vernacular
responsive
way
of life in these
regions
.
This change
is vastly
experienced
in the
architecture
.
The upcoming
modern
buildings
in these
areas
are defying
the basic
passive
principles
used
,
opting
for mechanical
principles
to respond
to the climate
.
This has negatively
affected
the human
thermal
comfort
in modern
buildings
.
In response
to this
,
this research
,
has studied
the vernacular
principles
used
in these
areas
both
internationally
and locally
.
This shows
the different
responses
adapted
in diffrerent
areas
with the same
climate
.
Locally
,
this research
had a keen
interest
on the Gabbra
community
that lives
in Chalbi
desert
.
Both
modern
and traditional
buildings
in the area
were
studied
and compared
in thermal
performance
.
This led the author
to draw
conclusions
and recommendations
on the best
way
to build
for better
thermal
performance
in the upcoming
modern
buildings
.
