Thre influence of space in child development

Children  mostly  learn  from  experimentation,  exploration,  inquiry  and  discovery  rather  than  what  is  taught
and  said.  The  spaces  designed  therefore  must  nurture  and  inspire  their  inquisitive  spirits  and  characters.  The
influence  of  spaces  designed  for  them  on  their  learning  is  quite  crucial  and  one  must  first  comprehend  their
spatial  awareness  and  overall  development.
However,  in  most  of  the  spaces  created  for  the  children  are  not  internalised  by  the  designers  in  terms  of  how
the   children   assimilate   with   these   environments.   And   therefore   these   spaces   created   turn   out   to   be
redundant  and  this  draws  clear  disconnect  for  the  child  between  their  home  environment  and  that  of  the
school.
To  design  for  the  children  one  must  first  understand  the  type  of  environment  that  offers  opportunities  for
children  to  learn  through  self-‐  exploration  as  they  develop  holistically.  The  study  the  role  of  pedagogy  and  its
aid  in  the  development  of  the  child  should  also  be  comprehended.  This  will  help  identify  and  recommend
qualities  and  aspects  of  architectural  spaces  that  influence  positive  child  development.
This   study   undertook   a   case   study   methodology   in   the   urban   context   where   it   analyses   the   different
pedagogies  found  in  the  local  kindergartens.
The  research  concluded  and  recommends  that  the  design  of  learning  environments  should  unify  the  exterior
and  interior  spaces  for  the  children.  The  spaces  designed  should  ensure  that  all  the  spatial  elements  are
utilised  together  in  order  to  produce  an  effective  environment  from  which  the  children  are  able  to  discover,
exploit,  experiment  and  learn.
